Your selection must include devices that are absolutely reliable, easy to use and built to work in harsh environments. We have used this device a number of times and include them in our redundant recommendations for survival kits that also include wind proof butane lighters, tinder, chemical fuel tabs, boat matches, one hand sparkers, magnesium bars and spare striking pads all sealed up together. You want options that allow you to start a fire with gloved hands or the use of an injured limb  - fast!. Believing you can simply rub two sticks together in exigent circumstances is not only foolhardy (good skill to know) but will likely contribute to your unplanned demise. When you are freezing your sorry ass off you\'ll appreciate the option.  This device is one of the best to date. The magnesium in the flint throws small embers as well as sparks at the fire so it is much easier to use than normal flint fire starters.  This is a very rugged product built to last.
